My Astro Boy collection on the telly!
This is a bit off topic for my blog, but I just have to tell you how excited I am that my treasured Astro Boy collection will be seen on the ABC TV show Collectors this Friday (June 5th, 2009) at 8 pm.
The film crew came to our house in late March to shoot the segment, and I haven’t seen the finished result yet. They were here for about 4 hours, and the edited result will be around 3 minutes long, so goodness knows what they’ll have kept in the finished piece, but I’m really looking forward to checking it out, nevertheless! It is quite possible I may have made a bit of a ninny of myself….but that’s OK. It was such fun to do the segment, and it is always a pleasure to do some show-and-tell with my Astro Boy stuff.
I have loved Astro Boy since I was just 7 years old – and I remember seeing the very first black-and-white cartoon version on TV. It took just one episode for me to be hooked! There’s something very appealing about a cute boy robot who can save the planet, yet still be emotionally fragile at times.
I like to collect the weird Astro Boy bits and pieces more than the expensive stuff made especially for collecting. My most treasured Astro Boy possession is my mismatched pair of children’s toilet slippers from Japan….. I suspect I am the only Astro Boy collector who has a pair of these! If you miss the show on telly, or don’t live in Australia, go to the ABC TV’s website (www.abc.net.au) after Friday and you should be able to download the show to check it out. Collectors is one of my favourite TV shows – I look forward to it every week. So you can imagine how thrilled I am to know I’ll be on an episode too.

Must make sure I watch it, or catch the episode online (I often miss all but the end of the show). I suspect anyone with a passion is going to come across as a bit of a ninny to other people – look at how people’s eyes glaze over when we start raving on about textiles. So I wouldn’t worry too much!

Fiona,
Famous Players Kids mag here in Canada profiled you. Pretty fun article and, as someone who lived in Japan for a couple of decades, don’t apologize at all for not buying “normal” things as a 30 y/o. I’m approaching 50 and I still get a thrill out of gachapon toys be they Winnie the Pooh, Spongebob, Super Mario or Hoshi no Kabi. Hey, cute is still cute at any age and my relatives all laugh at/with me…but what the heck, it brightens up my home and I’m always giving them away when the kids drop by.
Anyway, did you ever see the Tezuka Osamu store in the basement of Tokyo Opera City? They had EVERYTHING Astro Boy. You’d be in heaven.

Hey thanks Johnny – glad you liked the article in the Canadian magazine – and that you are a fellow traveller when it comes to collecting “kids’ stuff”. If I ever get back to Japan (still on my wish list…) I’ll definitely visit that Tezuka store in Tokyo – not sure if it was there in the 1980s when I lived there, but it sounds amazing!
By the way, my wonderful Mum (now in her 70s) still buys me the occasional Astro Boy toy or trinket for my collection, and she has been known to buy me Godzilla stuff, and Ren and Stimpy items too. And my sister bought me some fab Spongebob items a while back – it’s great to have the family looking out for cool stuff for me, even now that I’m in my 50s! Life is great, isn’t it?!
cheers, Fiona
