Stick Weaving
Sets of weaving sticks are $17 plus postage and handling (around $2 within Australia).
Stick weaving is a traditional technique that seems to be ready for a resurgence.
It involves using a set of sticks which have holes in one and and a point at the other. Yarn is attached to the holes at one end of the sticks – these become your warp threads.
Your weft threads are woven back and forth across the set of sticks. It is quick and easy, and such fun! You can make a scarf in around 3 hours!
I sell sets of weaving sticks, in several sizes. They come in sets of 5, 6, 7 or 8 sticks. The sticks in the set of 5 have the biggest diameter, and the sticks in the set of 8 have the smallest diameter.
The set of sticks is held in your hand. Each set will give approximately the same width of finished weaving. You can join lengths together to create bags, cushions, garments, etc.
All sets of weaving sticks are available with full colour written instructions. You can also read about stick weaving in my how-to article in Down Under Textiles magazine, issue 2.
I am also in the process of creating some stick weaving kits, featuring my own hand-painted 8-ply woolen yarns in various delicious colour combinations – watch this space!
